1895 Iowa Census: Johanna HUSEBY Family

A year after Arne passed away, Johanna and the remaining family appear in the 1895 IA Census. Her son, Martin and his wife, Kjersti Helena (Bakkemoen) Huseby, are also living with them.

Anna's age is probably incorrect. Judging from her birthdate, in 1895 she should only be 25.

Martin J. HUSEBY (1867-1929)

Martin J. HUSEBY was born 29 Dec 1867 in Decorah, Winneshiek, IA. The Evangelical Church of America record for his confirmation (24 Jun 1883) also offers corroboration of his birth date.

In 1870 and 1880, Martin was living with his family in Decorah and Glenwood respectively. On 24 May 1893, he married Kjersti Helena Bakkemoen (b. 16 Feb 1862, Springfield, Winneshiek, IA).

1895 Iowa Census: Martin HUSEBY Family

In 1895, the Iowa Census shows Martin and Kjersti living in Glenwood next to (or possibly with) his widowed mother, Johanna, and sister Anna and brother Henry. It is not clear why their daughters, Alma and Mabel, are not listed, and also why Martin is listed as Martin A. as opposed to Martin J. It is possible he was using Arneson (the patronymic) as his middle name, or perhaps it was an error by the census taker.

Tragedy struck the HUSEBY household in 1897 when their daughter Alma passed away on 6 Dec. Sadly her twin sister Mabel also passed away the following year on 19 Jun 1898. On a happier note another daughter was born to them on the same day who they named Mabel Hazel.

1920 US Federal Census: Martin HUSEBY Family

The image for the 1920 Census from Ancestry is very difficult to read, but one can make out Martin, Kirsti (the census taker may have spelled it Kristi), and Alvin. Sadly their daughter Mabel Hazel passed away that year on 14 Feb at the age of 21, so is not listed.

Martin lived another eight years and then he died on 7 Sep 1929.

He was buried on 9 Sep 1929 beside his wife. Martin's birth year is incorrect and should read "1867."

It is curious that both of the above records also list a Mrs. Martin HUSEBY who died on 18 May 1929 and was buried on the 21st. After looking again through the HUSEBY booklet, I noticed there were two obituaries for Mrs. Martin HUSEBY. Apparently Martin married an Elise (Ellingsen) Haneborg after Kjersti's death. The following is her obituary.
