On 3 Aug 1984 Verla Williams wrote a letter to the State Archives in Hamar asking for information about Arne Johansen and received the following letter confirming his marriage to Johanna.

1895 Iowa Census: Johanna HUSEBY Family

A year after Arne passed away, Johanna and the remaining family appear in the 1895 IA Census. Her son, Martin and his wife, Kjersti Helena (Bakkemoen) Huseby, are also living with them.

Anna's age is probably incorrect. Judging from her birthdate, in 1895 she should only be 25.

1900 US Federal Census: Anton Erickson Family

By 1900, Johanna was living with her daughter Anna's family in Decorah Township. Anna had married Anton Erickson in 1896. Apparently Anna's brother, Henry, was also living with them and helping with the farm.

It is interesting that the record shows Johanna arrived in the USA in 1866 as we have no other records showing where Arne, Johanna, and their family were living from 1851 until then.

1895 Iowa Census: Martin HUSEBY Family

In 1895, the Iowa Census shows Martin and Kjersti living in Glenwood next to (or possibly with) his widowed mother, Johanna, and sister Anna and brother Henry. It is not clear why their daughters, Alma and Mabel, are not listed, and also why Martin is listed as Martin A. as opposed to Martin J. It is possible he was using Arneson (the patronymic) as his middle name, or perhaps it was an error by the census taker.

Tragedy struck the HUSEBY household in 1897 when their daughter Alma passed away on 6 Dec. Sadly her twin sister Mabel also passed away the following year on 19 Jun 1898. On a happier note another daughter was born to them on the same day who they named Mabel Hazel.
