By 1880 Maren (going by Mary) and Martin Engle were living in Muskegon, MI with their four children: Emma (b. abt 1867), William Anton (b. 3 Dec 1872), John Edward (b. 15 Oct 1877), and Anna Louisa. (b. 4 Dec 1879). 1880 had to have been a sad year for the Engles as their baby daughter, Anna, passed away from congestion of the lungs on 22 Feb 1880.

Marthe Arnesdtr HUSEBY (1850- )

According to the Grue parish records, Arne and Johanna's second daughter, Marthe, was born 24 Jul 1850 in Grue, Hedmark, NOR, and was baptized 20 Oct.

We currently only have one other record for Marthe and that is when she migrated to Denmark with her family on 6 Jun 1851. Interestingly it states that she was born 24/6/50 which conflicts with her birth record. Unfortunately there is not yet any trace of her after that.

Death Record and Gravestone: John Albert HUSEBY

According to records of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, John Albert HUSEBY died 9 Feb 1904 and was buried 12 Feb at the Lutheran Cemetery in Decorah.

A short obituary appeared the following week in one of the Decorah papers stating that the cause of death was throat trouble.

Findagrave.com lists the death date as 10 Feb 1904, but unfortunately doesn't reveal its source. An image of his gravestone can be found on the Iowa Gravestone Photo Project website. His daughter, Anna, and son, Edward, who both died at a fairly young age are buried beside him.

UPDATE (30 Jul 2016): In looking over the HUSEBY booklet again, I discovered some letters I had previously overlooked. One was a note from my mother, Verla Williams, and it described how she had been corresponding with Joyce Peterson whose husband, Loren, was a descendant of John Albert HUSEBY. Joyce had wanted a picture of his gravestone and Verla discovered that there wasn't one. She suggested to Joyce that perhaps they could gather some money and have one put on the grave, but nothing was ever done. So eventually Verla ended up doing it herself.

The following letter details some of the problems that occurred during that whole process. It turned out that some gravestones were in the wrong place.

She also had included a few additional pictures.

Mathilda Arnesdtr HUSEBY (1858-1944)

Mathilda Arnesdtr HUSEBY was born on 10 Mar 1858 in Norway. According to the 1910 Census she arrived in the United States in 1866. In 1870 we find her living with her family in Decorah Township. On 8 Apr 1882, Mathilda gave birth to a son, Albert. Unfortunately we have no information about his father. On 26 Dec 1883 she married Sigvart Anton Webjørnsen (he had not changed his name to Williams yet), who had recently become a widower. He adopted Albert and they went on to have ten children of their own.

Martin J. HUSEBY (1867-1929)

Martin J. HUSEBY was born 29 Dec 1867 in Decorah, Winneshiek, IA. The Evangelical Church of America record for his confirmation (24 Jun 1883) also offers corroboration of his birth date.

1895 Iowa Census: Martin HUSEBY Family

In 1895, the Iowa Census shows Martin and Kjersti living in Glenwood next to (or possibly with) his widowed mother, Johanna, and sister Anna and brother Henry. It is not clear why their daughters, Alma and Mabel, are not listed, and also why Martin is listed as Martin A. as opposed to Martin J. It is possible he was using Arneson (the patronymic) as his middle name, or perhaps it was an error by the census taker.

1895 Iowa Census. Martin A. HUSEBY. Image courtesy of Ancestry.com.
Tragedy struck the HUSEBY household in 1897 when their daughter Alma passed away on 6 Dec. Sadly her twin sister Mabel also passed away the following year on 19 Jun 1898. On a happier note another daughter was born to them on the same day who they named Mabel Hazel.
