Henry Nicolai HUSEBY (1872-1956)
The Evangelical Lutheran Church of America records give Henry's birth on 7 Oct 1872 and his baptism as Henry Nicolai HUSEBY at the Little Iowa Congregation (later Washington Prairie Lutheran) Church on 6 Mar 1873. Henry's sponsors were his uncle, Johannes HUSEBY, and his grandparents, Marthe and Nils Katterud. Marthe married Nils after the death of her first husband, Johan Evensen HUSEBY.
Detail of Baptismal record. Henry Nicolai HUSEBY (6 Mar 1873). Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, Records, 1875-1940. Image courtesy of Ancestry.com.
Also of interest is that the baptism of Henry's first cousin, John Albert HUSEBY (not to be confused with his older brother of the same name), was recorded eight entries lower. The original record was apparently retyped at a later date as Ancestry.com also has an image of that record. Note Henry is listed as Henry Nicolai Johannesen HUSEBY. It is possible the family was trying to decide between the patronymic and the farm name for their surname as other records from this period have listed their surname as Johansen, Johannesen, or Johnson.

From 1880 to 1895 he lived on the farm in Glenwood Township, Winneshiek County with his family. By 1900 he was living with his sister Anna Erickson's family, helping them out with their farm in Decorah Township.

1930 US Federal Census: Henry J. HUSEBY Family
It is interesting to note that Henry is listed with the middle initial "J". As we'll see the inscription on his gravestone is identical and is probably referencing the patronymic "Johannesen" that we saw on his baptismal record.
By 1930 the six oldest children had left the nest, but a few more joined: Marvin Elliott (b. 5 Aug 1922), Myrtle Louella (b. 19 Aug 1926), and Delores Margaret (b. 13 Jan 1928).
